Tankless water heaters cost more up front and are usually cheaper to operate; tank water heaters cost less to install and deliver more hot water per minute during a real Palouse winter. The right answer depends on your incoming water temperature, your fuel type, and how many showers your house runs at once.
What's the actual difference between the two?
A tank water heater holds 40–80 gallons of pre-heated water and keeps it hot 24/7, ready to draw. When you run a shower, it dumps that hot water and refills, reheating as it goes. When you run out, you wait. Standby losses (keeping that tank hot even when you're not using it) are the trade-off.
A tankless (or "on-demand") water heater heats water only when you turn on a hot-water tap. It fires a high-BTU burner or electric element and heats the water flowing through a heat exchanger. There's no reserve tank, no standby loss, and — in theory — no running out of hot water.
When does tankless make sense?
Tankless is usually the stronger choice in these situations:
- You have adequate gas service (or the electrical capacity for a whole-home electric tankless) and want to lower your monthly operating cost long-term.
- You have space constraints — tankless units mount on a wall and free up a closet.
- Your household hot-water demand is spread out rather than clustered (a working couple who don't run three showers back-to-back at 7 a.m.).
- You're building new, or already opening up the wall where the water heater lives — the install premium is smaller when the finish work is already open.
When does a tank still win?
Cold groundwater is the reality nobody talks about. Palouse groundwater in January is cold — often in the low 40s. Tankless units are rated for a certain gallons-per-minute rise, and the colder your incoming water, the fewer simultaneous fixtures you can run without hot-water fade. A large family that runs a shower, dishwasher, and washing machine simultaneously in January is asking a lot of a mid-sized tankless.
Tanks also cost roughly half to install. If your existing tank works, replacing like-for-like is often the right call — especially in rentals, cabins, or vacation homes where the payback math on a tankless upgrade doesn't pencil.
Where do homeowners get burned?
The two big mistakes we see: undersizing a tankless unit for the household's actual peak demand, and skipping the annual descaling that tankless units need in areas with harder well water. Hard water is common on rural Palouse properties, and a tankless without a softener or annual flush scales up fast — losing efficiency and eventually failing early.
On the tank side, the mistake is running one until it leaks catastrophically. A 12-year-old tank in a finished basement is a flood waiting to happen. Replace it on your schedule, not the tank's.
