Older Palouse farmhouses behave very differently from newer suburban homes in a Moscow or Pullman subdivision. If this is your first winter, spend the first month getting to know the system you inherited, then schedule a professional walk-through before the first hard freeze — the small work you do in October saves you the emergency call in January.
What are you actually dealing with in an older farmhouse?
Farmhouses on the Palouse were built across a century of different construction eras, and most of them have been added onto at least once. That means the heating system you inherited may be a mix — original wood stove, retrofit central furnace, maybe an added mini-split for a bedroom addition, sometimes electric baseboard in the back rooms. Knowing what you actually have is step one.
Older homes also have air-leakage patterns that newer homes don't. Uninsulated crawlspaces, single-pane windows, unsealed attic hatches, and gaps around plumbing penetrations all matter more in a farmhouse than in a 2015 subdivision. The best HVAC system in the world can't overcome a house that leaks conditioned air out the roof.
What should you learn about your system in the first month?
- Where every source of heat is. Walk the house room by room. Note vents, baseboard, radiators, mini-split heads, wood stoves. Some rooms might have multiple sources; some might have none.
- Where the filter lives. Older systems sometimes have filters in unexpected places — return grille, side-cabinet slot, or an in-line media cabinet in the basement.
- How the thermostat is configured. Is it a single-stage, two-stage, or heat-pump-compatible thermostat? Older homes sometimes have a mismatched thermostat that's been holding the previous owner back.
- Where the water shutoff is. Non-HVAC, but critical — first-winter plumbing failures are common and knowing where to shut off water fast prevents floods.
- What your fuel setup looks like. Propane tank, natural-gas meter, fuel-oil tank, or all-electric? Each has different considerations for the first winter.
Where do first-winter homeowners get in trouble?
The most common trap is assuming the previous owner's setup is optimal. It usually isn't. We regularly walk into farmhouses where the thermostat is in a room that's 8°F warmer than the rest of the house — so the furnace shuts off while bedrooms sit at 58°F. Or a wood stove that's been the primary heat for years is at the end of its life and needs to be de-rated to backup. Or a mini-split zone was installed but has never been serviced. First winter is when you inherit all of those quiet problems at once.
The second trap is underestimating a real Palouse cold snap. We can drop below –20°F for days at a time. If your system was marginal on a mild winter, it will fail on a cold one. Waiting until the cold snap to find out isn't a strategy.
